Agreement on free Open Access publishing with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Publish Open Access free of charge in six selected ASM journals.

Danish Universities entered into a three-year national Subscribe to Open (S2O) agreement in 2025 with the publisher American Society for Microbiology (ASM), covering, among other things, publishing and Open Access.

DTU Library joined the agreement in mid-2026, covering accepted articles in the period from 1 June 2026 to 31 December 2027.

The agreement includes read access to all ASM journals, as well as the opportunity for free Open Access publishing for DTU-affiliated corresponding authors.

Subscribe to Open (S2O)

The S2O model transforms traditional journal subscriptions with read access into a collective funding collaboration focused on Open Access. This allows entire journal volumes to be made freely available if enough institutions participate in the agreement.

The agreement with ASM therefore provides Open Access publishing in six selected journals without APC charges, along with discounts on page charges and supplementary charges.

The agreement with ASM also ensures that Open Access publishing remains guaranteed, even if the required threshold of contributing institutions is not reached.

To benefit from the agreement, you must:

  • Be a corresponding author affiliated with DTU
  • State DTU as your institutional affiliation (Technical University of Denmark)
  • Be a member of ASM to obtain additional discounts on various extra charges

Included titles

The following six S2O journals are included in the agreement:

  • Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
  • Applied and Environmental Microbiology
  • Infection and Immunity
  • Journal of Bacteriology
  • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
  • Journal of Virology
