Patents and Patent Applications at DTU

– on searching for patents

DTU tops the list of European universities that have submitted the highest number of patent applications to the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2025, with 133 patent applications.

DTU files more patents than any other university in Europe

How do I find patents from DTU?

DTU Orbit
DTU Orbit is DTU’s official research database, and patents are one of the document types you can select. In DTU Orbit, you will find all DTU’s PCT applications, also known as international patent applications.

Espacenet
The global patent database Espacenet provides an overview of patent applications. It is a worldwide patent database that allows searching for published patent applications from more than 70 different countries and regions, with coverage dating back to 1782. Patent documents are available in full text with free access.

All of DTU’s published applications from 2025 can already be found here.

Derwent Innovations Index
DTU Library has access to the patent database Derwent Innovations Index. It covers curated patent records from the Derwent World Patents Index, with applications from 60 different countries, enriched with citation information from the Patents Citation Index. The records include links to the full text of patent documents.

This makes the database the right place to search not only for DTU patents, but also for exploring a specific technical field.

To find DTU patents, simply search for DTU’s Derwent code “UYRR-C” under “Assignee” in the “Documents” tab.

Chemical Abstracts via the SciFinder platform
Chemical Abstracts contains manually curated patent information from more than 60 patent-issuing authorities worldwide, including bibliographic data, English abstracts, chemical substances with CAS numbers, reactions, structures, and advanced indexing. It is one of the most detailed and searchable sources of chemical patent information in the world.

Approximately 50% of all chemical substances are first disclosed in patent literature, making patents a central source of chemical information.

Patents as an Information Source
Talking about patents and access to finding and reading them, there is one more important point. With their descriptions and level of detail, patents are an important information source for further research and idea development.
