DTU Messages

Be extra vigilant about phishing and suspicious messages

Throughout October, we are focusing on four cybersecurity habits that can help protect DTU’s data and systems. Under the heading “Stronger cybersecurity. Together”, we will introduce a new cybersecurity habit each week.

In light of the recent cybersecurity incident, we are bringing forward our campaign message about phishing and suspicious messages. Data clean-up will follow later in October.

DTU has been the target of a serious cyberattack, and the personal data of current and former employees, students, guests and collaborators may have been affected.

This information could potentially be used to make phishing attempts and other forms of fraud appear more convincing. Be particularly vigilant, even if a message contains accurate information about you or your connection to DTU.

Phishing is a common method used by cybercriminals to try to gain access to data, accounts and systems. Phishing attempts may come in the form of emails, text messages, phone calls, or login and authentication requests.

Stop, check and report
Your vigilance can prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access to your DTU account, DTU’s systems or data. By stopping to check a message and reporting anything suspicious, you can help prevent an attack or enable DTU to respond quickly.

Most phishing attempts can be identified if you know what to look for. A few simple habits can help protect you, your colleagues and DTU:

  • Download “How to identify a phishing email” and learn the most important warning signs.

  • Report suspicious emails directly in Outlook.

Data clean-up will follow later in October
Data clean-up is an important security habit that helps limit the amount of unnecessary data we store and, consequently, the potential impact of a cybersecurity incident.

The two security habits, vigilance against phishing and digital clean-up, complement each other. We must both try to prevent unauthorized access and limit the amount of information that could be affected if something does go wrong.
