New programme structure - BSc and MSc

From the academic year 2023/2024, a new structure will be introduced for the civil engineering degree at DTU. This applies to students who are enrolled in the new study programmes starting from September 1, 2023. These structural changes also affect the courses that are offered, which include both students following the new study plan and those who are following an older study plan, whether you follow a standardised study plan or are delayed.

The new structure replaces the flagship model with a focus on the study programme’s 'Polytechnical foundation.' It includes mandatory courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. For more information about the new structure, you can visit dtu.dk.

The changes in the structure also result in several mandatory courses changing their course numbers, titles, and possibly their schedule.

What does this mean for you?

On this page, you can find important information if you are a BSc student and are following a study plan from before the summer of 2023.

It is crucial that you read through the following information to understand the relevance of these changes to your specific situation.

Additionally, please be aware that your programme specification may have other changes not mentioned on this page. Therefore, it is important to review your study plan again and check whether any of the courses you need to take have changed their numbers or have been discontinued. You can find your study plan at DTU Inside > Study rules > My programme specification.

If there are changes to your programme specification, remember to update your study plan in the Study Planner.

Where can you find more information about the changes?

  • In addition to the information provided on this page, you can refer to your updated programme specification, which reflects the courses that have been discontinued and the new ones that have been added. Your programme specification is thereby still valid.
  • If you have not yet passed Mathematics 1 or Physics 1, you will receive specific instructions from the course responsible on how to proceed. This applies whether you have failed the exam, been ill, or have not registered yet.

Courses that replace other courses from the academic year 2023/2024

Due to the polytechnical foundation, several basic courses will be replaced with new courses or course numbers. The new courses/course numbers fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Identical to previous courses, but the structure, learning format, and examination form may have changed.
  2. Overlap with previous courses but are not identical.
  3. Completely new courses, resulting in the removal of the old courses.

If you are following a programme specification from before the summer of 2023 and have not yet passed the courses listed below, you must replace them with the corresponding new courses:

For the academic year 2023/2024, the following applies:

Courses, which will be removed from the Course Base The courses will be replaced by
Introduction to programming and data processing (02631/02632/02633) Computer Programming (02002/02003)
Fundamental Chemistry(26027/26028/26030)
Chemistry (26020/26021/26022)
General Chemistry (26000)
General and inorganic chemistry (26001)
Theory of Science in Engineering (42610)
Science, Technology and Society (42611/42620)

The following rules apply to the re-exam:

  • You are entitled to three exam attempts in the same syllabus. The scheduling of re-examinations follows the current rules.
  • If a course is no longer offered, you are not entitled to retake the course.
  • Re-examinations must be offered within six months after a failed exam.

Courses ending later than 2023/2024

Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1 (01005/01006/01015)

Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1 will be split into two mathematics courses: 01001/01003 Mathematics 1a and 01002/01004 Mathematics 1b.

For the sake of students admitted before 2023 who have already followed the course in whole or in part but have not passed, 01005/01006/01015 will be offered one last time in the academic year 2023/2024. Information about the format, teaching, tasks, etc., can be found in the course description and on the course website.

See exam dates. Re-exams are offered in the course, as described on the course’s website. Afterwards, it will no longer be possible to take the exam in Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1, but only in the two new mathematics courses (01001 and 01002/01003 and 01004).

If you don't want or don't have the opportunity to follow 01005/01006/01015, you can instead follow the two new mathematics courses (01001 and 01002/01003 and 01004), which together can replace Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1 (01005/01006/01015).

Please note that 01001 and 01002/01003 and 01004 require a course in programming, which must be taken at the latest at the same time as the courses. The programming course in the polytechnical foundation is 02002/02003 Computer programming but other programming courses will do as well.

If you wish to follow the new course, you must contact the Study Administration (studadm@adm.dtu.dk) and request to be transferred to the new courses.

Physics 1 (10018/10020/10022/10024/10050)

Physics 1 (old version) will be offered in several versions for the last time in the academic year 2023/2024, starting in autumn 2023:

  • 10020 targeted Chemistry and Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Software Technology.
  • 10022 targeted Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data, Cyber Technology & Environmental Engineering.
  • 10024 targeted Artificial Intelligence and Data, Cyber Technology & Electrical Engineering.
  • 10050 targeted Life Science Engineering.

01018 will not be offered again, as the course is aimed at General Engineering, and there are no students who still need to pass the course.

  • Students who need to pass one of the above courses can instead follow 10060/10063 Physics. Please note, however, that 10060/10063 runs from spring to autumn.

If you want to take the course or retake the course in the old version, you must register yourself via the Study Planner. If you wish to be registered for the new version, you must contact the Study Administration (studadm@adm.dtu.dk) and request to be transferred to the new course.

Exceptions

Students in the following study lines have special versions of Physics 1. These versions will continue to be offered:

  • Data Science and Management
  • Design & Innovation
  • Engineering Physics
  • Earth and Space Physics and Engineering

Change of study programme/readmission

For students who change their study programme or apply for readmission, an individual assessment will be made to determine whether admission takes place on a programme specification before 2023 (the flagship model) or on a programme specification after 2023 (the new structure). The head of studies will make this assessment, which takes place in connection with an application for a change of study programme.
