When can you use generative AI?

Generative AI can be a useful tool in your studies if it is used correctly. It can help you learn, generate ideas, structure your thoughts, and work more efficiently. However, it is important to think critically about when and how you use generative AI in your studies.
AI generated information is not the same as scientific knowledge, and you must always verify information provided by generative AI. You must also always ensure that your use of generative AI complies with the applicable study and examination regulations.
Examples of how you can use generative AI:
- Overview of course material: Generative AI can create short summaries of texts and help you get started with your reading, but reading a GenAI summary is not a substitute for reading the article itself. Be mindful of copyright and the sharing of PDFs. Read more about what you are allowed to do with files for which you do NOT hold the copyright.
- Understanding complex material: Use GenAI to get explanations of difficult concepts and to ask questions to the literature.
- Reflection: Get suggestions for reflection- and exam questions.
- Study planning: GenAI can help create drafts for study plans if you specify available time, deadlines, and syllabus requirements.
Generative AI can support project work when used as a source of inspiration and a planning tool.
- Idea development: Use GenAI to get inspiration for topics, perspectives, and brainstorming, especially if the subject area is new to you. Be aware that generative AI does not cover all perspectives.
- Project plan: GenAI can help create drafts for project plans and timelines as well as task breakdowns.
- Method and theory: Get inspiration for relevant theories and methods but always examine authorship and application in academic sources.
- Literature search:GenAI can be a useful sparring partner when it comes to identifying new and relevant keyword search and gaining an overview of relevant academic databases. GenAI is a supplement, and you must always assess the quality and academic credibility yourself.
Generative AI can be used as support in your exam preparation.
- Exam plan: GenAI can help draft a study and exam plan if you specify available time, topics, and areas requiring additional focus.
- Critical questions: Use GenAI to ask critical questions about your problem statement, analysis, or conclusion and to gain new perspectives.
- Exercises: You can use GenAI to generate exercises for areas where you feel less confident, or entire sets of exam questions that you can practice with.
