Requirements for passing exams and part-exams

• Part-exams assessed with part grades
• Part-exams based on an overall assessment

A course has been passed if you have been awarded the grade of 02 or higher or the assessment ‘Pass’. Part exams cannot be retaken if the course has been passed.

All part-exams on a course must be offered in the same course module. Find more information on part exams and ongoing tests in connection with re-exams at student.dtu.dk under 'Study rules/Exam/Re-exams'.

A course consisting of several assessments may be assessed

• either by assigning separate grades for the individual assessments;
• or by an overall assessment of the various part-exams (holistic assessment).

Under “Type of assessment” in the course description, the free-text field must specify whether the assessments are graded separately or assessed as a whole.

Part-exams assessed with partial grades
If official partial grades are used for the individual part-exams in a course, you will be informed of these on an ongoing basis, and the total final grade is the weighted average of the partial grades, rounded to the nearest grade in accordance with the Danish 7-point grading scale. The final grade is rounded up if the average is halfway between two grades.

However, a special pass requirement applies at DTU for courses with part exams for which partial grades are used. The pass requirement is:

1. that the average grade of the part-exams must be at least 02 without rounding up, and
2. that no partial grade must be below 00.

It follows from the above passing requirements that you must participate in all individual assessments in a course with partial grades to pass the course. If you have not participated in all individual assessments, the course cannot be passed. You must therefore be given the assessment “Not passed”, regardless of whether the course is assessed according to the 7-point grading scale. This is to indicate that no academic assessment has taken place. That also applies if you have passed the other individual assessments.

If you have not participated in any of the part-exams and have not withdrawn for the exam you will be registered with EM (Not met). 

Part-exams based on an overall assessment
When using the overall assessment, no partial grades are given, and any indication of the weighting of the individual part-exams as an integrated part of the teaching is only indicative. You may only be informed of and receive one final grade for the course.

The course coordinator can decide that all part-exams must be completed/approved as a condition for receiving an assessment for the entire course. In such cases, this must be stated in the course description. If it is not stated in the course description that one or more tests, as an integrated part of the teaching, must be completed to pass the course, an overall assessment must be made of the ongoing tests you have completed. You can thus pass the course on this basis.

If you do not participate in/hand in any of the part-exams in a course and have not registered for the exam you will be given the assessment 'Not met'.
