Apply for pre-commencement credit transfer

If you have previously passed courses at the same level as the programme you will be studying at DTU, you have the opportunity to get credit transfer. Read more about pre-commencement credit transfer and how to apply.

What is pre-commencement credit transfer?

Pre-commencement credit transfer means that you get ECTS credits transferred for courses you have passed before you start your programme at DTU. This means that courses you have previously passed - either at DTU or at other educational institutions - fully or partially replace courses on your new programme, which you can therefore complete in less time.

Whether or not you can receive credit will only be assessed when you are admitted and accept your place of study at DTU. Credit will only be transferred if your previous courses correspond to courses in your new programme.

Who can apply?

  • You are obliged to apply for credit transfer for passed programme elements (courses, etc.) from all previous non-completed ordinary study programmes at the same level.
  • If you have previously completed a programme, you can choose whether you want to apply for credit for courses you have passed at the same level as the programme you are applying for.
  • If you are applying for a Bachelor of Engineering programme and have previously completed an Academy Profession programme, you can apply for credit transfer for parts of the programme if a credit transfer agreement has been signed. For information about current credit transfer agreements, please send an email to merit@adm.dtu.dk.

How to apply

If you have previously passed courses from a non-completed study programme at DTU, you do not need to apply for pre-commencement credit transfer yourself. DTU will automatically make a pre-commencement credit transfer assessment, as we already have access to your previous results and course descriptions.

Transferring courses

Apply to have courses transferred

If you previously have been enrolled as a guest student or single course student, you can apply to have courses transferred to your enrolment as full-degree student.

When should you apply for pre-commencement credit transfer?

When you apply for admission to DTU on optagelse.dk, you must provide information about previous study programmes.

Once you have accepted your place, we will send an email to your DTU student email if you need to apply for pre-commencement credit transfer. The email will tell you when and how to apply.

Apply early so you have a better chance of getting a decision before the start of your studies.

How and when will you receive an answer to your application?

The decision on pre-commencement credit transfer will be sent to your student email, and you must read your decision carefully.

You can expect to get an answer around the start of the semester and, in some cases, also after the study start.

What happens if you are granted credit transfer?

If you are granted a credit transfer and the credits can be transferred to the mandatory part of the programme at DTU, then the credit transfer is binding and must be transferred.

On the other hand, if the credits can be transferred to the elective part of the programme at DTU, you can decide whether to accept the credit transfer or not.

Note that for 30 ECTS credits you have been granted in pre-commencement credit transfer, your maximum study period will be reduced by one semester.

If you have been granted a pre-commencement credit transfer, you can still obtain a diploma from DTU even if you have been granted credit transfer for more than half of the programme.

Study planning and credit transfer

If you are granted a pre-commencement credit transfer, you must deregister from the courses you have been granted credit for and possibly register for courses from the other semesters of the programme.

The amount of pre-start credit you receive can have a big impact on your study planning.

You are therefore welcome to contact the Study Guidance if you need help on how to proceed while waiting for your credit transfer decision.

What happens if you do not apply for pre-commencement credit transfer?

If you do not apply for credit for previously passed programme elements at the same level, or if you provide incorrect or incomplete information, the DTU may withdraw your enrolment.

Appeal against decision

If you do not get your application granted you can appeal the decision via email to merit@adm.dtu.dk.
