Get help and guidance on how to comply with copyright and personal data laws and regulations when streaming and recording teaching activities at DTU.

When streaming and recording teaching activities, both lecturers and students must comply with the laws and rules on copyright and personal data.

These guides will be updated regularly based on feedback from students, lecturers and others.

Guides to streaming of teaching activities (without recording)

Streaming (without recording) of teaching activities with access only for your own students on the course - link shared via for instance e-mail or DTU Learn.

Only the teacher can be seen/heard No requirements No requirements
Ordinary teaching activities - normal interaction between the students and the lecturer No requirements No requirements
The students participate actively The students must be informed in advance that the class is streamed if this is not obvious (e.g. the course is 100 % online) As for normal teaching activities*

Notes

*This means that:

  • DTU has agreements with Copydan on the use of texts and pictures for teaching activities. These agreements also apply to streaming for students where a link has been shared via DTU Learn, in the same way as for ordinary teaching activities in a class room/lecture hall.
  • The lecturer should always remember to indicate the source of all materials used in the teaching, including the lecturer's own materials.
  • Materials used by the lecturer must either be covered by a licence or an agreement that gives the right to use them for teaching purposes, be open accessible or made by the lecturer himself/herself.

Ordinary teaching activities - normal interaction between the students and the lecturer It is recommended that the lecturer at the beginning of the streaming reminds the students that the stream is open for everyone and explains how they can avoid being seen/heard. All materials must be cleared (the lecturer must ensure that the materials used are legal)*
The students participate actively Students/guest lecturers must be informed that a link has been shared outside DTU Learn and how and when the link has been shared. All materials must be cleared (the lecturer must ensure that the materials used are legal)*

Notes

* This means that:

  • DTU's agreements with Copydan do not apply to this type of teaching activities.
  • If people outside DTU have access to watching a stream, the lecturer must have cleared all materials (pictures, videos etc.) with the rights holder, or the materials must be covered by an open licence that gives the right to public use, or the lecturer has made them himself/herself.
  • The lecturer should always remember to indicate the source of all materials used in the teaching, including the lecturer's own materials.

Ordinary teaching activities - normal interaction between the students and the lecturer

DTU‘s GDPR Team and GDPR Legal Team recommend that recordings of teaching activities for public use do not contain students, also in case of normal interaction during teaching activities.

If you choose to do so:

  • Written consent must be obtained from any student that can be seen/heard or actively participates in the teaching activities and from the guests, if any.
  • At the beginning of the recording/lesson the lecturer must remind the students that the teaching activities are recorded and are open for everyone and explain how they can avoid being seen/heard. This applies to every session of a series of recorded teaching activities.
  • Whenever possible, the recording should be edited in order to cut out the participation of the students.
All materials must be cleared (the lecturer must ensure that the materials used are legal).*
