Best Practice for Lecturers and Head of Studies with Recommendations for Retaining International Students
DTU Career Center has gathered best practice below, which you can use in your work to help retain international students in DK. This best practice has been gathered both internally from four Head of Studies at DTU and externally from partners of DTU Career Centre: IDA, AKA, DI and Lyngby Taarbæk Kommune Jobcenter.
- Organize local career days at your institute targeted international students. Invite international alumni to share how they landed a job in Denmark, as well as companies who can share current career opportunities and the recruiting process with their company. Please reach out to Career Centre: karriere@dtu.dk
- Divide project groups so that both Danish and international students are represented in all group work to support integration between the students
- Facilitate discussions in class, where lecturer & students together share input on relevant companies and leads in DK, which students can reach out to and do project collaborations with. This ensures that international students hear about relevant companies and specific leads in DK that might be common knowledge to Danish studentsTell international students that student jobs are essential to land a fulltime job quickly in DK after graduation:
DI learns that 74% of graduates find work within the first two months after graduation if they have had a student job of more than 15 hours weekly. Only 9% of graduates find work within the first 2 months if they have not had a student job.
AKA learns that 54% of graduates who has had a study-relevant student job while studying start their first full-time position within the same company. - Exposure of Talent Partners: Invite engineers from Talent Partner companies of DTU and strengthen the international students' knowledge of professional challenges in the industry of Denmark as well as general knowledge of relevant Danish companies.
