Good advice for your bachelor's project

Are you about to write your bachelor's project ? Are you unsure about how to approach the project? Or are you lacking inspiration for what your project should be about? Read on and get your project off to a good start.

Begin by reading the rules for the BEng bachelor's project

You can read about the rules for the BEng bachelor's project in your programme specification.

It is always a good idea to read the rules before you start preparing your project.

Three steps to get started with your project

You must plan your BSc project well in advance and preferably at least one semester before you plan to start the project. Here you will get three good tips for getting started with the project:

You must find the topic for your project and a supervisor yourself. It is different whether students find the topic or the supervisor first.

You can access previous student projects via DTU's digital library DTU Findit. It's an excellent place to start if you need general inspiration for your project.

If you have difficulty finding a supervisor or a good topic, you can think about the following:

  • Is there a course where you had a lecturer you were particularly happy with? Or a topic you found particularly interesting?
  • Is there a research group that works with research that you think is exciting?
  • Is there a company you would like to try to collaborate with or can see yourself working in, in the future?

Suppose you are in doubt as to who can guide you in a specific academic subject. In that case, you can use DTU's Course Database to search for subject words and thus find course supervisors who have insight into your subject.

You can also contact your head of studies to discuss your academic ideas. It is not certain that your head of studies will be able to point out a specific supervisor for you. Still, it may be that your head of studies can give you some ideas and enough knowledge to proceed from there yourself.

When you have found a supervisor, you must prepare a project proposal together, describing the project's most important aspects (topic, title, timetable, etc.).

You and the supervisor agree on all the formalities surrounding the project, such as the length, form and structure of the project report and the duration of the oral defense.

Only your supervisor can register you for the BSc project. You will receive a confirmation email from the Office for Study Programmes and Students Affairs via the Study Administration when your registration has been approved, and you have officially been registered for the project.

Therefore, check your student email before starting the project to ensure the registration is in place.

Do you want to do a project together with a company?

Suppose you would like to do your project in collaboration with a company. In that case, you may be able to find a suitable project in DTU Career Hub or contact a company you find interesting yourself.

In addition to your DTU supervisor, you must also have a contact person or supervisor in the company if you choose to write with a company.

DTU's legal department, Law and Contracts, has created some guidelines and contract templates you can use when agreeing on cooperation with a company. Your supervisor has access to the contract templates, so you should ask him/her which template you should use. In addition, the company may also have a contract that you must complete.

Please note that you are responsible for ensuring that you are adequately insured.

Do you need special conditions?

If you are an SPS student and have been granted extra time for the exam, you can be granted a three week extension of the project prior to the project.

You have received a decision letter from the SPS office concerning extra time (special conditions). It must be presented as documentation to the project supervisor. The reason for this is that it is your DTU supervisor on the project, who must register the extension when the project is reported in the Project Reporting System before the project start date.

In case of any questions about special conditions, the SPS unit can be contacted at specialexamconditions@adm.dtu.dk.
