Good advice for your BEng bachelor's project (diplomingeniørprojekt)
Are you about to write your BEng bachelor's project ? Are you unsure about how to approach the project? Or are you lacking inspiration for what your project should be about? Read on and get your project off to a good start.
Begin by reading the rules for the BEng bachelor's project
You can read about the rules for the BEng bachelor's project in your programme specification.
It is always a good idea to read the rules before you start preparing your project.
As a starting point, you have to find your project and a supervisor at DTU yourself. It is therefore a good idea to start preparing for your BEng bachelor's project about a semester before you actually plan to write your project.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
In general, the BEng bachelor's project must be carried out in cooperation with a company.
You may be able to find a suitable project in the DTU Career Hub or contact a company that interests you.
Feel free to make a small list of companies you might be interested in contacting.
It is not certain that the first company you contact will have the time and opportunity to work with you, so it is good to have several options.
You must have both a supervisor from the company where you are writing the project and a DTU supervisor.
Suppose you are in doubt about who can give you advice in a certain academic area. In this case, you can use DTU's course database to search for keywords and find lecturers who have insight into your area.
It may also be that you have already had a lecturer on a course at DTU who you would like to have as a supervisor for your project.
When contacting a potential supervisor at DTU for your project, it is a good idea to:
Be in time. It is not certain that the first person you contact will have time to be your supervisor, and then it is nice to have time to find someone else.
Be clear about when you want to start the project.
Be clear about the subject(s) you want to write about, if you have found a company and which one?
You can also contact your head of studies to discuss your academic ideas. It is not certain that your head of studies can point to a specific supervisor. Still, perhaps your head of studies can point you in the right direction or give you some feedback so you can proceed from there yourself.
For inspiration, you can look at previous student projects via DTU's digital library DTU Findit.
Your DTU supervisor registers you for the BEng bachelor's project when you have completed a contract for the project together.
You will receive a confirmation email from the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs via the Study Administration when your contract has been finally approved, and you have officially been registered for the project.
Therefore, check your student email before starting the project to ensure the registration is in place.
If you are an SPS student and have been granted extra time for the exam, you can be granted a 3-week extension of the project before the project.
You have received a decision letter from the SPS office regarding extra time (special conditions). It must be presented as documentation to the project supervisor. The reason for this is that your DTU supervisor on the project must register the extension when the project is reported in the Project Reporting System before the project's start date.
DTU's legal department has created a number of guidelines and contract templates that you can use when you do a project in collaboration with a company.
You should also be aware that the collective accident insurance that Polyteknisk Forening has taken out does not cover stays in a company at home or abroad in connection with a project.
