Rules on exemption

Once you have read the information on this page, you must select the relevant issue(s) from which you wish to apply for exemption. See the list at the bottom of the page. Here, you will find the procedures and study regulations that apply to the issue for which you request an exemption. There are various types of exemptions you can apply for at DTU, and each may have its specific requirements regarding content and documentation. It is therefore important that you familiarize yourself thoroughly with what applies to your particular situation.

As a rule, your application for exemption may not take up more than one A4 page with font size 12, normal margins and 1.5 line spacing.

You need to upload your exemption application along with the relevant documentation at dispensation.dtu.dk.

All documents, including your application and relevant attachments, must be uploaded in PDF format; otherwise, the exemption committee cannot view them.

Why you need to apply for exemption

If, as a student, you do not comply with DTU’s study regulations, you must apply for an exemption to continue your studies. DTU’s exemption board may grant exemption from DTU’s study regulations, if it does not conflict with applicable legislation.

When should you apply for an exemption?

If you have been asked to apply for an exemption because you conflict with one or more study regulations at DTU, you must submit your application by the deadline stated in the letter you received from DTU in your e-Boks.

If you have not been asked to apply for an exemption but know that you are or will conflict with a study regulation at DTU, or you wish to request permission to deviate from a study regulation at DTU, it is generally recommended that you apply as soon as possible.

When can you expect a response to your exemption application?

If you submit your exemption application by the specified deadlines for the relevant board meeting and it contains all the necessary information and documentation, you can expect a decision 8-10 weeks after the exemption board reviews it at their next meeting.

Please note that the processing time presupposes that your application is sufficiently documented upon submission. Missing information may result in extended processing time.

Meeting dates and application deadlines

See the overview of the exemption boards’ meeting dates as well as the corresponding deadlines for submitting an application for consideration

Questions about exemptions can be directed to the Study Guidance or, for specific applications, to studiedispensation@adm.dtu.dk.

What should you do while waiting for a decision on your application?

If you have applied for an exemption, even though you are in conflict with one of DTU’s study regulations, you have the right to continue your studies while your application is being processed.
