If you become a parent during your studies, you have the right to take a break from your studies. You can choose to take a leave of absence from your studies, or you can apply for a postponement of your study deadlines, which will give you more flexibility in organising your studies.
In general, you cannot take parental leave as you know it from the labour market while you are a student in higher education. Instead, you have the following options:
If you become a parent while enrolled in a higher education programme at DTU, you have the right to take a leave of absence from your studies for up to one continuous year.
During your leave of absence, you will not be able to participate in lectures, exams or activities/guidance related to final projects.
If you are on leave of absence, you will not be eligible for the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme or the SU Parental Supplements.

If you become a parent during your studies at DTU, you can apply for a postponement of your study deadlines.
Both the parent giving birth and the co-parent can obtain a one-year postponement of the maximum duration of study, the study activity requirement and possibly a first-year exam.
When you are granted a postponement of deadlines, you have the option to plan a flexible course of study. You can choose to be inactive for a year or take one or more courses and/or exams during parental leave.
Apply before the child turns one year old.
The postponement of deadlines applies from the child's birth date.
