Courses outside DTU
During your studies you can spend one or two semesters abroad or take courses at another Danish university. Here you will find an overview of where to find the relevant rules and deadlines.
Courses at a foreign university
If you are going abroad, you can see the rules and deadlines at studyabroad.dtu.dk.
Courses at another Danish university
If you are going to take courses at another Danish university, there are several things that are good to consider:
- Choice of courses
First of all, you need to find out which courses at which university you would like to follow.
Information about course offerings, rules, deadlines for registration, etc. can be found on the specific university's website. If you cannot find it there, you can contact the university's student counsellor.
- Preapproval
Once you know which courses you want to take at another university, you must apply for a pre-approval at DTU. By pre-approving the courses, you are sure that the courses can be included in your programme at DTU.
In the rules for credit transfer, you can read about the type of courses you are allowed to choose.
You can easily apply for more courses than you have room for. In the credit system, you can mark courses as planned or backup courses. Backup courses are assessed but are not included in the overall in the blocking of points in the system. There is no rule for how many courses you are allowed to apply for, but as a rule of thumb it is recommended to apply for a maximum of twice what you plan to take.
You apply for pre-approval of credit via the electronic credit system: www.merit.dtu.dk.
The processing of applications can take up to 8 weeks, so apply well in advance and be aware of the deadlines at the university you are applying to.

- Sign up for courses
You must apply to enroll in the courses at the university offering the courses. Often you need DTU's pre-approval to register.
- Final credit transfer
After the semester, when you have passed the exam in the courses you have been pre-approved, you must apply for credit for them so that they are transferred to your programme.
Final credit transfer you also apply for via the electronic credit system: www.merit.dtu.dk
If you have any questions about your credit application/pre-approval, please send an email to merit@adm.dtu.dk.

- Study Planner
Your preapproval credit will not be visible in the Study Planner. Therefore, you must insert a self-created course for the semester in which you will take courses outside DTU.
Once you have applied for and received approval for your final credit, it will be registered in the Study Planner, and you can delete your self-created course.
