If you have a visual impairment

There is a significant difference in the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairment; therefore, suitable solutions for student life can often vary.

As a student with a visual impairment, in addition to the more obvious challenges, you may also experience difficulties with:

  • concentrating while studying
  • endurance
  • structuring and planning your study course.

Types of support

As a student with a visual impairment, you can receive different forms of support:

The first step is an assessment to determine your specific support needs. This is carried out by the Institute for the Visually Impaired (IBOS). Based on the assessment, IBOS may recommend one or more of the following types of support:

  • Digital study materials (Nota)
With access to Nota, you can receive your study materials in digital formats.
  • Software package
The program IntoWords can be used to read study materials aloud.
  • IT starter package and remote support
The starter package includes a high-performance laptop with specialized software and, if needed, additional hardware tailored for students with low vision or blindness. The package also includes a subscription for remote support, which provides guidance on how to use the IT tools.
  • Various assistive devices
For example, a classroom camera, special lighting, and other aids.
  • Secretary assistance
Support with notetaking, larger written assignments, exam registration, copying, library research, and similar tasks.
  • Mobility training
A mobility instructor helps you learn to navigate your campus or internship location.
  • Academic support teacher
Typically, this will be a lecturer from your academic program. These support sessions may help you review academic material, develop subject-specific learning strategies, and strengthen your academic performance.

Please note: All IT equipment is provided on loan and must be returned if you withdraw from or complete your education.
