Internship for BEng

All BEng programmes inclue an internship at 5h or 6th semester. The internship is always worth 30 ECTS credits. On this page you can read more about the internship and find the documents you need for your internship.

The rules for internship

You can read about the rules for internships in your programme specification. Here you can, e.g. see what you must fulfil to be registered and start the internship, what the learning objectives are for the internship and how long the internship will last.

You can find further information about engineering internships in the document "Guidelines for engineering internships", which is also found in your programme specification.

Internship coordinators

All programmes have an internship coordinator who must approve your internship before you start your internship.

Your internship coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all students in your programme are assigned a DTU internship supervisor.

Good to know and good advice about internships

You must find an internship yourself. You can, e.g. use DTU Career Hub, or contact a company yourself.

It is a good idea to start looking for an internship in good time. Feel free to make a small list of companies that could be interesting for you to contact.

It is not certain that the first company you contact will have the time and opportunity to accept your internship. It is, therefore, good to have considered several possible internships.

It is a good idea that you familiarize yourself with the rules for the Engineering internship for BEng programmes before you start contacting potential internship places. They will probably have questions for you about the length of the internship and other formalities when you contact them. It also gives a good impression of you if you are prepared and can answer the general and overall questions.

Feel free to take a look at the Internship Agreements that are used when making an internship contract. You'll find them further down this page.

Please also think about why you would like to do an internship in this particular company. So it is clear to the company that you are motivated.

If you are an SPS student and have doubts about how and when to present a potential internship for the considerations you may need during your internship, you can contact Student Counselling Service at DTU. They can guide you and give you sound advice on how and when you can express it in a good way.

Contact the internship coordinator for your programme if, for example, you have challenges finding an internship yourself.

You cannot register for your internship yourself via the Study Planner or elsewhere. Only your internship supervisor from DTU can submit your internship contract for approval.

Once the contract has been approved, your internship will automatically appear in your Study Planner.

Several things in your student life may impact when it is best for you to start an internship.

Sometimes it is best to do it just before you have to write your final project, for example, because you need your study plan to include the courses you are missing to be allowed to do an internship.

It may also be that it makes better sense to save some of your elective ECTS points until you have completed the internship so that the internship can inspire you to choose your final elective courses.

An engineering internship can often give you a unique insight into the working life you will encounter when you graduate. The internship can help you learn more about yourself, your professionalism and what types of tasks you would like to work on after graduation.

You should be aware that the collective accident insurance policy taken out by Polyteknisk Forening does not cover stays in a company at home or abroad.

You can read more about this in DTU's study rules: Insurance for students.

You are responsible for ensuring that you are properly insured during your internship.

When you, as a Beng engineering student, are going to do an internship in connection with your programme, you must give the SU office a copy of your employment agreement/internship agreement via SU-praktikaftale@adm.dtu.dk.

Read more on SU and internship and contact the SU office if you have any questions.

If you would like to do an internship abroad, you can often get good advice from your head of studies or your internship coordinator; they still have to approve your internship agreement.

Read more about internships abroad at DTU Study Abroad (in Danish).

The rules allow you to do the internship part-time in very 'special cases'. You still have to meet the applicable learning objectives, and the internship must correspond to 100 full-time working days.

That means that your internship must be extended by the reduced time. For example, if you take the internship half-time (50%), the internship must be extended to 200 working days. The extension must not mean that you come into conflict with your maximum study time.

'Special cases' covers, for example, SPS students who have a documented reduction in work. Contact your internship coordinator if you need more information about engineering internships at a reduced time.

Contact the Study Guidance if you need help and guidance to understand what the rules mean for you.
